Company Founder Rhonda Kallman Honored with Maverick Award

On March 1, Rhonda Kallman and her former partner at The Boston Beer Company Jim Koch were reunited when they were presented with "the maverick award" at the Beer Business Daily Summit in Phoenix Arizona.

The award was presented by publisher Harry Schumacher to an audience of brewers and beer industry insiders.

Said Rhonda later:
I was curious as to the literal definition of being a maverick so I looked it up -- "an unorthodox and independent-minded person. a person who refuses to conform to a particular party or group". I guess you could say that it pertains to how I go about things...
Imagine 25 years ago trying to sell "a daaark beea" in Boston that was $5 more a case than Heineken called Samuel Adams Boston Lager, actually made in Pittsburgh, with no advertising and self-distributing out of our cars. The landscape was very different then--there were only 35 breweries in the US, Michelob was the gold standard of American beer, green- bottle imports started to infiltrate the scene, no distributor would participate and there were no women selling beer. On the east coast, nobody even knew what a microbrewery was. For the first 5 years, I swear the industry looked at the segment as a fad. The results Jim and I got might've made it look easy, but it sure wasn't...
Fast forward 25 years...I'm starting all over again with brand positions that have every possibility of being part of the future landscape--independent light beer with drinkability and caffeinated pilsner beer. I hope being a maverick gives beer drinkers more reason to stay with beer...

Recently, I came across a six pack of Edison, a new brand of light beer. My fiance and I tried it and we were amazed.  It was packed with flavor yet only 109 calories?  I needed the full story.
